My Students
“It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations--something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.”
- Katherine Patterson
Our school is an urban public school in upstate New York. We are extremely fortunate to have a diverse student population and a wonderful sense of family. We have a high poverty rate. 100% of my students receive free/reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. My students love to read anything new they can get their hands on. Unfortunately, they mostly rely solely on the reading material we have in our classroom library. I'm hoping to engage my reluctant readers and continue to foster those who already love to read and write.
My Project
My students need books to fill our classroom library. Students will be able to borrow the books from our classroom library. They will read the books during independent reading and at home.
Having a variety of material to read in the classroom will allow students the opportunity to understand and connect to others.
Classroom lessons will teach students the strategies and skills to navigate through these books, thinking deeply about what they are reading and what connections these texts give them with the world.
The books for our classroom library will help my current students and students for years to come as they will be a part of our classroom library.
