Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are resilient, caring children. They work hard and come to school every day, ready to learn and believing they will succeed.
Before Hurricane Harvey, almost 90 percent of of my students were already living at or below the poverty level.
Then, the hurricane floods made life even harder for them. They returned from shelters, and found their homes destroyed. Their once limited learning resources were now completely gone.
As their teacher-librarian, I am passionate about providing them with lessons, resources, and experiences at school which will help them be successful students who enjoy learning. Strong literacy and computer science skills will be important building blocks for their future learning.
Many of my students do not physically have access to the world outside of their neighborhood and city. I know that with access to quality, diverse libraries of books and information, and also greater access to technology, my students can increase their knowledge, experience the world, and build their dreams.
My Project
It is imperative that I teach my students computer science in addition to library and literacy lessons. As the library media specialist, I will provide the only technology classes available at our school.
Most of my students have very little access to technology in their homes so it is important that they receive technology knowedge and skills at school.
The Pathfinders Summer Institute Scratch Creative Computing Course is a computer science class that will provide me with knowledge, skills, and experience. I can use to teach my students fundamental computer programming with Scratch, a programming language developed at MIT to meet the interest needs of younger students. With the lessons I learn at the Institute, I can teach my students how to create animations, interactive projects, and even their own computer games! My students will be excited about learning, education, and their futures. They will be able to envision themselves with successful careers and futures that require computer science knowledge and abilities.
