Help me give my students needed calculators. My chemistry class students need more advanced calculators to complete their assignments. Many are sharing calculators. This calculator does all the basic calculations they will encounter.

My Students

In our small rural town, the majority of my students come from poor homes. Generally, their parents are poorly educated and, for some of my students, school is the most positive one-on-one adult interaction they receive. Their backgrounds are very diverse so some come eager to learn and some come with low expectations based on past learning experiences. Every day it is my goal to introduce them to something new in the world of science.

Due to the high poverty in our area, school funds are tight and my students are handicapped by the lack of technology available in their classrooms.

A basic technology such as computers can open up a whole new world of educational opportunities they might not have otherwise.

My Project

Currently, many of my students do not have calculators needed to complete the calculations we do in chemistry. Chemistry has a lot of advanced math, and in order to learn the concepts they must have calculators that will perform the functions required in the problems. They are sharing borrowed calculators to complete daily practice assignments and during tests we scramble around trying to find enough calculators so that students don't lose time in completing the test.

Testing is stressful enough without having to be concerned that your calculator can't be used to complete the problems.

We need a class set of calculators really bad. This would allow the teacher to keep the correct calculators in the classroom to be available as needed. Having the calculators will give them the tools to maximize their learning.
