This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a class of 23 amazing and inquisitive third-graders with academic and developmental levels ranging from kindergarten to fourth-grade levels. We come to school every day ready to learn with and from each other within the incredibly fun and close-knit learning community we have created together this year. My students often are sad to say good-bye at the weekend and school breaks as we have become a real classroom family, sharing a joy for learning. Our entire school gets free lunch and breakfast in the classroom, which is another important reason for me to keep my kiddos engaged and wanting to come to school every day.
The safety created by our classroom routines and procedures, rooted in respect and self-management, allows students in my classroom to feel safe, heard, and supported when challenged with tasks requiring perseverance, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity.
Issues stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic have impacted regular student progress with school closing disruptions, absenteeism due to student or family illness, and in many cases, families thrust into economic crises due to unemployment or inability to obtain child care. It is now more important than ever for Social-Emotional Learning to be a cornerstone of my practice.
My Project
My students have experienced the isolation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and need support in managing their feelings, relating appropriately and positively to peers, as well as the time and place to form friendships and collaborate in their learning.
This seating arrangement will provide a calm space for students struggling with anxiety and anger that has manifested itself because of their individual experiences throughout this pandemic.
It will also provide a space for learning from and with peers in learning tasks designed for a collaboration supporting individual students to find success in their challenges, and pushing them to excel in their areas of strength.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
