Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am wrapping up my second year of teaching Algebra 1 and Strategic Learning for high school math at a title 1 school. Throughout many lessons, I have found it helpful to include manipulatives and quick-check students' answers with whiteboards. They write their answer on the board and all raise it at the same time. As of now, their "white boards" are laminated printer paper, which is tedious to clean.
Due to working with low-income students, many students are missing basic supplies, such as pencils.
While I am happy to provide pencils, students will often walk out of my room with my class pencils. I hope that with the pencil parking, I can establish a system to check pencils in and out.
Additionally, students rely on devices to complete their work online on a daily basis. However, many of them come unprepared with devices that are not charged. With a charging station, I could allow students to charge devices during lecture so that they are ready for independent work time. Plastic organizers would be used to distribute supplies to students, such as glue, crayons, markers, tape, scissors, or anything else needed for our class work.
Currently, I teach and write notes on my iPad, but have to hold it as I walk around the classroom. Adding a podium to my classroom would ensure cleaner, easier to read notes for my students. Finally, I would use the paper towel dispenser to ensure students are using sanitary paper towels. Currently, they sit on a table without any protection, leading them to collect dust and germs.
