Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In school I was always a visual learner, grasping concepts best when they were presented to me with charts, maps, and photographs. Now, I teach ELA and social studies classes containing many ELL students who would benefit from visuals, and my classroom is not equipped with the resources to provide them with effective presentations.

I teach in a public middle school in a high-need community. In my classroom, I am fortunate to have a portable Smartboard, equipped with all of the software to display PowerPoint presentations and Internet windows. However, there is no LCD projector to use, so the machine collects dust in the classroom. I would love to show students movies and pictures to bring material to life and help them make connections to the world around them.

An LCD projector would change the course of my instruction. My students would be able to grasp the material better if they were able to see visual presentations. In ELA, I would be able to edit sentences with them, pull up examples of student work, teach technology/research skills and more. In social studies, I would show them countless films, pictures, listen to music, watch cultural rituals and dances, etc.

Your donation would help my students learn to read, write, and better understand the world around them. The ability to experience pictures, maps, and film (not just on black and white xeroxed sheets) would help to bring social studies to life for my students and instill in them a love of learning and intellectual curiosity.
