My Own Mouse Storyteller Sock Puppet!

My students need nice clean socks to make a sock puppet. We add googly eyes, foam mouths, felt ears and tails, pipe cleaner whiskers and pom noses for 150 second graders.

My Students

My students come from all sorts of backgrounds and families. They have equally varied educational challenges. I teach drama to the entire elementary school, but have a special project in mind for my 150 second graders.

My wildly diverse classes of second grade students can use help to grow in reading confidence and fluency.

Some of them struggle with poverty, homelessness, psychological and educational diagnoses, family deployment, cultural stress and speaking English as their second (or third) language. My school houses district wide ESOL and Deaf Education programs. They love puppets. Speaking through a puppet builds confidence and brings out the most shy or differently abled children.

My Project

Second grade students work hard to master reading and prepare for a big jump in content in third grade. They need LOTS of reading and speaking practice to improve confidence. My second grade drama students come from every type of background and have many stories to tell and poems to write.

Each of my 150 second graders will make their own personalized Storyteller Mouse Sock Puppet to use at home practicing reading and writing skills.

We use the book Frederick, by Lio Lionni, to talk about the importance of self expression and how words make us imagine and feel new things. Students practice making poems and telling stories with puppets in class, before taking them home. They are strongly encouraged to use them all summer to retain language expression and fluency skills leading into third grade.
