My Students
Do your remember your favorite teacher from school? How did they inspire you? My goal is to give my student's as many opportunities as possible in my art classroom. One challenge that I will face this year is the growing population at my high school and the amount of supplies that are available.
I have taught in urban schools for years and our high school is not any different.
It is very diverse. There are over 1300 students that come from various backgrounds. The students at our school are passionate and are excited to learn in my classes. By building community and positive relationships they reveal to me what their dreams are, their struggles and what they want to do in their future. I have been able to work on building their skills, entering their work into exhibitions and help them to prepare portfolios for college applications.
My Project
The foundation to art is drawing. I begin teaching the fundamental techniques so that they can build on their skills through out the year. I think it's important to continue practicing not only in class but also at home. By being able to provide sketchbooks my students will be able to carry their private portable work space where ever they go to document what they see. My students will have weekly sketchbook assignments to keep their inspirations flowing.
I became an art teacher because when I was in high school the art room was my space to be creative and to feel inspired.
I work hard to give my students opportunities that they don't have. I want my students to document the experiences this year in their sketchbooks. My students have not had a professional sketchbook before. I think having professional materials will help students feel empowered by being able to work with great materials.
