My Future Story... Girls Can Be Scientists Too!

Help me give my students a library of books featuring women in STEM careers, a subscription to Let's Find Out magazine, and materials to create a science center in our classroom where we can explore science for ourselves!

My Students

My students are kindergarteners. They learn through play and exploration. Every morning they walk through the door looking forward to the special time we set aside to practice skills through hands-on activities. They love to build, explore, create, and interact with each other.

My students are hands-on learners.

They come to me with many different backgrounds. Many lack experiences that build social skills and positive attitudes toward school. Many times, my classroom is the first place they experience being part of a community.

My Project

My kindergarteners are eager to talk about what they want to be when they grow up! I want to provide them with exposure to a variety of STEM-related careers and opportunities to dream big and imagine future careers in STEM fields.

By the age of 6, most girls believe they are not as smart as boys and they do not believe they can be good at math and science; but "if girls see people like themselves belonging everywhere, then they grow up believing they can become anything"--Ana Maria Porras.

After reviewing the "Women in STEM Exploration, Innovation & Communication through Video Production" project, I was inspired to create a project to inspire the girls in my classroom. I want to provide my kindergarteners with a library of books featuring women in STEM careers so that they can see themselves as future scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians! After learning about Jessica Cramp and Kristen Lear through the IF/THEN resources, we can read about other famous women who have impacted the world through STEM! With the hands-on materials from Lakeshore Learning, we can create a science center in our classroom where girls will have the opportunity to experiment and explore on their own, just like real scientists and explorers do. A subscription to "Let's Find Out" magazine will provide my students with age-appropriate magazines so that we can continue to explore the world around us.
