Help me give my students an environment filled with social emotional learning and calming activities where they can destress and express their feelings while being comfortable.
I work as a clinical school social worker in an urban elementary school. Our students have experienced a number of traumas as it relates to the pandemic, losses and family issues.
My goal is provide a calm space where students feel safe in sharing and expressing themselves as it pertains to their mental health wellness.
It is important that the whole child is focused on as we include academic and social skills. This space will also be available for mental breaks with the use of quiet time, fidgets, reading, board games, cards and arts and crafts.
Incorporating mental health support and breaks are important and help to reduce anxiety and frustration. These activities can also serve as a learning tool. Studies show that people with strong social emotional skills and overall well-being are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, socially and physically.
My Project
Building social emotional skills is important in developing the whole child. A welcoming environment with feelings books, fidgets and a calming corner will help students to feel safe with being vulnerable and expressing themselves.
These social emotional activities and reading materials will help my students to not only enjoy what they are doing, but to help them learn strong social emotional skills that assist with managing emotions, making responsible decisions and maintaining positive relationships.
