My Project

Exceptional children—such as those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, sensory processing differences, intellectual disabilities, or other developmental needs—may benefit from sensory toys, flexible seating, and dimmed classroom lighting because these supports help them regulate their sensory experiences and improve learning.

I am asking for a variety of sensory supports for my students including flexible seating, light covers, and sensory toys.

Sensory toys (such as stress balls, fidget spinners, textured objects, or therapy putty) can:

* Improve focus and attention by providing a controlled sensory outlet, reducing the urge to seek stimulation in disruptive ways.

* Reduce anxiety and stress, helping children feel calmer and more secure.

* Support self-regulation, allowing students to manage overwhelming emotions or sensory input independently.

* Enhance fine motor skills and hand strength through repetitive manipulation.

* Decrease challenging behaviors by providing an appropriate way to meet sensory needs.

Some of my children are highly sensitive to bright or fluorescent lighting. Dimming the lights can: * Reduce sensory overload, making the classroom feel less overwhelming.

* Minimize headaches, eye strain, and discomfort caused by harsh lighting.

* Lower anxiety and agitation, helping students remain calm.

* Improve concentration by reducing visual distractions.

* Create a more comfortable learning environment, especially during quiet activities such as reading or independent work.

When sensory supports are matched to a child’s individual needs, they can:

* Increase participation in classroom activities.

* Improve attention and task completion.

* Promote emotional regulation and positive behavior.

* Enhance communication and social interaction.

* Support academic success by removing sensory barriers to learning.
