Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a school that serves a population of more than 90% students of color, with 64% of them on Free and Reduced lunch. My students are brilliant young women, but without our school to nurture their development, many of them would languish in some of my district’s more poorly-funded schools that do not have an academic curriculum sufficient to their needs. Our students take only Advanced Placement or Pre-Advanced Placement classes. Our school is one of few that can boast a 100% college acceptance rate.
Personally, I can tell you that these are the most gifted and motivated students I have ever encountered.
They come to school every day with a desire to learn. Not only are they model students, but they are genuinely thoughtful and appreciative. In fact, they are the ones who inspired me to start this project. At the end of the year, I found out that they submitted a video to the College Board for their AP Teacher Appreciation contest and won me $250 that I plan to use toward this project. The video is beautiful, and still brings on an embarrassing amount of tears.
My Project
My school is composed of students from families that cannot afford the materials needed for students to participate in my after school Dungeons and Dragons club. This club is important to the many students that rely on it for an enrichment activity. Most of my funding is already secured, so I need very little to make this project work.
This club gives students an opportunity to problem solve, as they come out of their shells.
The first Dungeons & Dragons game was played back when Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson chose to personalize the massive battles of their fantasy wargames with the exploits of individual heroes. This inspiration became the first fantasy roleplaying game, in which players are characters in an ongoing fantasy story. This new kind of game has become immensely popular over the years, and D&D has grown to include many new ways to vividly experience worlds of heroic fantasy.
The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more. You can also explore the world of Dungeons & Dragons through any of the novels written by its fantasy authors, as well as engaging board games and immersive video games. All of these stories are part of D&D.
