This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My English Language Learners are comprised of a variety of backgrounds and cultures and aim to learn and understand English in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We are in a high poverty, low income school with Title I status in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As seen in the latest news, our state compared to the rest of the nation has the worst discrepancy of funding between the rich and poor. It is truly an injustice. Despite such hardship, my students deserve learning opportunities where they can grow and support each other as contributive citizens of this global society. In addition, our newest students are attempting to assimilate into the social culture of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and learn English language so they can function in this society.

My Project

From mid March through the end of May I (along with another ESL teacher colleague) will teach an after school ESL Literacy club to first, second, and third graders. This program will be held twice a week after school for an hour and a half per session. However, after the regular school day, my students are very hungry and would like a snack! Our school does not have additional funds in the budget to provide this snack unfortunately. That's why I am asking for your help. If my students had a food snack and a juice box they would be nourished, motivated and ready to learn! These awesome first, second, and third grade students are committing their time beyond the regular school day to learn English language and need basic reading and writing skills support. A little snack might not seem like much but it would make the world of a difference to them! Thank you in advance for your kindness and your support!
