My 5th graders have made HUGE strides in reading chapter books independently this year! At the beginning of the year, the majority of my students willingly admitted that they were "fake readers" and have perfected the practice. As a veteran teacher of twenty-seven years, I have witnessed this downward trend, as students don't have the interest or stamina to read chapter books on their own. There have been many distractions for this like the multilayers of technology and the lack of accountability for reading chapter books. In my opinion, these two areas have caused this shift in making students to not like reading. My goal has always been to change this path for my students and motivate, encourage, and connect them to the real beauty of reading chapter books and the rewards that come with it!
My secret ingredient to changing my "Reluctant Readers" to "Rock Star Readers" is matching them with a "Book That Can Hook!"
I have been very blessed with a gift that gives me the knowledge and instinct to match students with the right book. I've witnessed a tremendous amount of growth in reading this year. My students have been captivated, engrossed, and hungry for more books to devour. With a special thank you to my previous donors from this organization, I am humbly asking for another set of books that will keep the momentum going in my classroom. My favorite questions that I'm asked are: "What is my next book that you recommend?" or "Is there another book in this series?".
