My 1st Graders Need to Move!

Help me give my students wiggle cushions, chair kick-bands, and clipboards for the classroom that will provide fidget breaks for my 1st graders throughout the day.

My Students

I teach at a low-income school and many of my students unfortunately have a background in trauma, and have stress and anxiety. Thus, my responsibilities as a teacher go far beyond the classroom. I try to incorporate some form of “movement breaks” into the school day because research shows physical activity in school leads to better cognitive performance and fewer behavioral issues. Additionally, movement cuts down on stress and anxiety.

However, the struggle to meet the rigorous academic requirements (even at a 1st grade level); while, finding time to infuse movement breaks throughout the day is very much a reality for me and my fellow educators.

Yet, I know I can teach my 1st graders to make responsible choices and advocate for what works best for them in regards to how they get their work done; while, infusing some movement/opportunities to fidget. I am excited for what the year continues to hold, and hope you can help me on my journey to inspire, engage, and help meet the needs of my 24 active 1st graders.

My Project

Currently, I have traditional "cubby" desks and chairs within my classroom. However, my goal is to adapt my current furniture to meet the needs of my active 1st grade class.

The resources within this project will allow my 1st graders to make responsible choices and advocate for what works best for them in regards to how they get their work done; while, infusing some movement/opportunities to fidget.

Their work can be done at their desk (with a rubber kick band that allows them to move their feet while seated), a wiggle cushion (that allows students to constantly fidget when seated in the classroom), or cross-legged on the floor with a clipboard.

Thank you for supporting me and my active 24 students as I try to give them seating options that meet their individual needs and provides and outlet for movement!
