The community that our school is located in is very close but suffers from high poverty and a high crime rate.
Students at our school are wonderful and have high goals, but they lack experiences and skills that many of their peers that don't live in poverty have.
Some of our classes have more than 50% of the students that are currently English language learners. We are always looking for ways to give our students a competitive edge to compete with the students not living in poverty.
For many of our students, we spend more time with them than their families because our families are forced to work 2nd and 3rd shifts to provide for their family. This leads to a lot of unsupervised time or a lot of siblings raising siblings. Our students lack many of the social-emotional skills that are expected in the real world. They face many challenges every day that are beyond the understanding of most people outside of an urban setting with high poverty.
My Project
Our track team is usually about 15-25 7th and 8th grade boys and girls. We practice at our middle school which does not have a track. There are always runners that would like to do hurdles, but I won't let them because we have none to practice on and I don't want them to get hurt at a meet. I also don't want them embarrassed going over hurdles for the first time at a track meet. The hurdles you donate will help our team for years to come. Our team is always competitive, but having no one to run two events in every meet guarantees we will never win a meet, but with your help, that could change.
