My students need math manipulatives to help with the new methods of common core. Students at this age need durable hands-on materials to help investigate in the math.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"I can explain it for you but I cannot understand it for you." So many of my students learn on their own and do not get the academic support if any support at home. I want to help my students to understand how they get to math rather than force memorization or to teach to the test.
My students are in an 100% poverty school.
Students are all on free lunch and free breakfast. It is some, the only meals of the day. Their safe place is school but it can be a war zone as well. They are battling lack of sleep, family issues of broken homes, foster homes, on a daily basis and even teaching themselves life and social skills. Education is their savior and I want to help them understand in a way that they can learn.
My Project
Students will be able to use manipulatives to help investigate the way they learn in mathematics. Students will be able to work independently or in small groups with leveled math resources. They will be able to use dominoes, number tiles, addition and subtraction flashcards, number lines, partner games, dice, and decks of cards. I can't wait to see their eyes light up when they are able to use these manipulatives in the classroom. It will help them learn number sense, numbers and operations and measurement and geometry.
I will be able to have manipulatives for student learning rather than the frustration that comes with paper and pencil.
Students can have fun learning which can lead to improvement in grades and understanding of mathematics.
