I teach K-5th grade students who are at all ends of the economic spectrum on our Title 1 campus. My goal is to provide students with programs that they would not otherwise have the likelihood of experiencing. Each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade student is presented with a personal choice in my music program.
Younger students in my school look forward to the day (starting in 3rd grade) that they are able to select their own area of emphasis.
All of my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students meet with music specialists in small groups on a weekly basis. This enables them to experience grit, respect, and responsibility due to having been given the opportunity to making choices based upon their growing interests.
As students experience musical success based upon their own choices, they engage with a measure of joy and confidence that enhances their overall school experience. Upon entering middle school, my students are equipped with a measure of musical confidence that helps them to become more likely to be surrounded by successful students, more involved, engaged, and socially competent throughout their academic journey.
My Project
The music stands I am requesting will enable my guitar and fiddle groups the ability to stand up or sit in chairs while practicing. Currently, students must sit on the floor in order to see the music folders that I have created for them. During our before and after school club rehearsals, we are only able to stand and play as a group if the piece is already memorized.
Music stands would allow students to create the appropriate height and angle for their music which would result in a tremendous improvement for guitar and fiddle practice versus reading music off of the floor.
Currently, students begin rehearsals enthusiastically yet tire quickly.
The addition of music stands would give students the ability to rehearse more comfortably. This could have a tremendous impact on our overall program as students would have an increased feeling that their rehearsal time is valuable and productive. Thank you!
