This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a haven, a place where kids can work toward a common goal. Our students need somewhere safe to be, a place off of the tough, local streets. Kids at our school learn commitment, teamwork, and pride, as well as academic skills.
I am the 7-12th grade chorus teacher.
I also teach 7th grade General Music, High School Integrated Arts, and an alternative elective class for our Transition students. Our students are vibrant and love to be the center of attention. All of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch, and there are after-school activities that serve extra meals so kids don't go hungry.
However, our budget is non-existent. Our building is old and hasn't been updated much since it was originally built in the early 1900s.
My Project
I am requesting this music for my students to practice sight reading. It's a very difficult skill to learn and having enough materials can be challenging. We need music that the students don't know - the whole purpose of sight reading is to have the opportunity to see a piece that you haven't spent time working on.
My chorus students are the light of my day.
I love spending time with them - they're funny and dedicated to making music. I've known these kids since they were in 7th grade and I can't wait to see what they become as they graduate!
