My Students

I teach music at an elementary school with a booming population of 1000 students, grades Pre-K to Sixth. My students experience music through singing, dancing, playing instruments, and musical theatre, and are provided numerous opportunities to perform.

My students are diverse and music helps us celebrate the differences that make us all unique!

We are 56% free and reduced lunch, we have a large group of military children, we have many ESL students speaking a variety of languages, and we serve a unit of awesome students with Autism.

Music brings students of all different backgrounds together to create and perform together!

My Project

A set of 15 soprano ukuleles would give my students an opportunity most will never have otherwise: learning to play a string instrument! We can go beyond playing recorders, applying the skills we have learned to a new area, and building their understanding of music.

Learning to play ukuleles will show my students the value of practice and perseverance, helping them work toward the goal of performance.

It will allow them to be creative and expressive, and provide a valuable opportunity to work as a team, a musical ensemble. It will also help develop fine motor skills.

STEAM connection: String instruments are a great way to connect music to the science behind it, as students learn about sound production, vibrations, frequency, and amplitude. They can literally "see the sound waves" as they create them!
