My Project
Music is a special avenue for students to learn cooperation, social skills, creative skills, leadership, and culture. Currently, my students have a limited supply of musical instruments to supplement their learning. The xylophones will allow students to experience a more enriching music class, playing instruments, singing, and learning music theory. Inspired by the pedagogies of Orff- Scwhulerk, Kodaly, and Dalcroze, I teach using a child-centered approach that incorporates movement, speech, music, social-emotional connections, and play. Musical concepts are learned by actively participating in developmentally appropriate activities incorporating singing games, chants, books, rhymes, and movement activities. If provided the opportunity, students will play xylophones along with the musical activities that utilize kinesthetic, auditory, visual, and tactical modalities. Music highly engages both the left and right brain, arousing creativity and imagination while also sharpening perception, memory, judgment, reasoning, and language.
The xylophones will help students experience a more enriching music curriculum that champions cultural diversity and supports social-emotional collaboration and learning.
We currently own six.
Students will work together in an ensemble to create artistic projects and joyously collaborate. The group activities will allow them to express their creativity and share their ideas with peers.
My classroom welcomes students into a culturally sensitive environment that celebrates musical diversity. In Hawai’is multicultural environment, we must expose our children to various genres that reflect our diverse communities. Many cultural songs have xylophone accompaniment parts. Music is an opportunity to explore one’s own cultural identity and develop appreciation and empathy for others. Currently, students are learning folk songs from Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. They learn more about their culture through our music class songs and develop a stronger appreciation for diversity. The xylophones will enhance the musical performance to the next level as they sing, play, and collaborate in a joyous learning experience.
