Technology is a word that instantly inspires students to want to learn. Ask a student to take a note-reading music test on paper and some will be excited, however, offer it on an iPad mini and each and every student will be counting the seconds before they get their turn.
Fun, excitement, and engaged learning are all words that describe my music classroom.
My students are absolutely amazing and they love music. They come to music once a week and they just want to play all the instruments and participate. My music classes are full of singing, movement, and instrument playing. This project will benefit all 600 students in my school from grades K-5.
My Project
I am requesting an iPad mini and a protective case to add to my music classroom. My music classroom has an iPad and a few laptops and we need more. These devices help to teach the students how to read music and play recorder in a way that inspires and motivates them. The app Flash Note Derby will let them learn how to read music. The app Garage Band lets the iPad become a drum set in my classroom. Other apps let the iPad become a timpani, congo drums, a beat box, a sound pad, a rock guitar amp etc. The possibilities are endless. Also, this iPad mini will be used to control and store the music for morning ceremonies, our talent show, our school concerts etc. One thing that I learned is that kids know how to use iPads and it is very easy to hand them one and let them take the lead.
Music is such an important part in any child's education.
With so much focus on standardized testing, I feel many students are losing their creative edge. Music is one of those subjects that ignite their creative spark. By adding more and more technology to my music classroom, the students become more inspired, learn at an accelerated pace, and this helps them to think further outside the box and develop a lifelong love for learning.
