My students need books, like "For the Love of Music," "Jazz A-B-Z" and "Old Black Fly," to provide Common Core connections in the music room, creating interest in both music and reading.
Reading really is a window to the world, and words are the gateway to musical concepts and instruction. When they are combined in a lesson, students become more engaged and make vital connections in the brain for learning which is a skill they will need in the 21st century to manage information well.
My students come from literally all over the world and from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
They often do not have much experience in either musical instruction or preparation for structured learning. Many of our students lack the physical, emotional and experiential resources to begin school, and they have many challenges. Music is the unifying factor in many of our classrooms, and the connections built through music enable students to overcome their challenges and succeed in the classroom.
My Project
My students need books to provide Common Core connections in the music room, creating interest in both music and reading. Primary students will use these resources to enhance, guide and reinforce musical concepts through songs, playing instruments, movement, and additional activities that take words directly from the pages of these books and apply them to musical activities. These activities will also enforce reading concepts and vocabulary.
My students will have a more engaged classroom and be able to make Common Core connections through the use of these resources, and many of them will provide excellent writing and compositional inspiration.
Our library will benefit from these new resources as well, and students will be able to recreate their experiences in my room each time they read these books. Students will better understand the connections between music and literature and how to continue this process independently.
