Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a special education school, serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students.
Our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds in New York City.
Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch, and more than 90% receive public assistance.
I am currently an Art teacher in the Greenburgh North Castle UFSD, where a number of factors contribute to a challenging but constructive environment for students, and for myself. The classes are made up of students with a range of learning levels, as well as a variety of emotional disturbances and behavioral issues, ranging from Asperger Syndrome to ADHD. Along with refining my ability to teach to multiple levels of learning in a single class, my time spent here has provoked a new level of self-sufficiency for me in terms of classroom materials. Funding is short, and anything above the barest essentials must be procured by me.
My Project
Our school building is not great, but our students still take pride in that this is the place that they come to learn every day. The students and I have come up with a beautification plan for our school. We want to line the walls with creative works of art and make it a place that everyone would love to come to learn. This is why we need these supplies to paint a mural. We need acrylic mural paint and masking tape. The mural will represent the hard work and pride of the students that currently attend our school and will leave something behind to inspire the students to come.
