Help me give my students Takis, Cheetos, and other snacks for the chance to learn the value of money by spending their Mustang Bucks (earned for making positive choices) on items in our monthly school store.
I am the school counselor at a Title I school where 97% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, many with traumatic life experiences most of us have never had to endure.
Many of our students have moved several times during the year (homes and schools), may not know where they are going to sleep at night, or may only get a hot meal at school, but they have a strong desire to learn and to make others proud of them.
My Project
The snack items requested will allow students to practice
math skills by adding up the cost of items to see if they have earned enough money to purchase them.
Students must also learn decision-making skills and delayed gratification as they must decide on which two items they will purchase or if they want to save their money for a higher-priced item to buy at a future store date.
Students also learn about selflessness, as I often see
students purchasing items for their siblings, parents and
even friends, showing they have learned the expectation of
