As a multi-handicapped special education teacher in an elementary school, my students are challenged daily to complete simple tasks that other people take for granted each day. As a teacher, I want my students to be successful and be able to offer them different approaches to learning. Each of my students has unique learning styles which are achieved through tactile and sensory items.
My students are able to enhance their memory and ability to learn through visual, auditory, or kinesthetic pathways.
These different multisensory pathways allow them to use their senses, which is crucial in their learning process. While using a multisensory approach focuses not only on the specific students' learning styles, it also focuses on using as many different learning styles in order for my students to be successful. With multisensory teaching, it allows the students to enhance their ability and desire to learn.
My Project
A multisensory learning approach is using teaching methods that involve engaging more than one sense at a time. Involving the use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic-tactile pathways.
Sensory tools make a difference in promoting regulation, improving focus, and increasing participation, therefore it provides my students the opportunity to be ready for learning!
Using a multisensory approach with my students enhances their memory and encourages their ability to learn. This includes taste, smell, touch, sight, hearing, and movement. I know my students will be more successful in experiencing lessons through multiple pathways that can best stimulate their brains and engage them more deeply in the subject matter.
The key to a sensory-informed classroom is that it supports the various sensory needs of my students in the classroom in a way that is as natural as possible.
