My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. I serve 50 students each day in our reading intervention program. Most of our students are young readers who learn best with a hands-on approach.
My struggling readers need multisensory manipulative materials to give them the hands-on practice that will solidify the concepts in their memories.
When students learn something using more than one of their senses, that learning is more likely to stay with them. In my reading intervention groups, I would like to include activities with more manipulatives. That way, the children will be able to physically touch, trace, and draw to practice what we are learning.
Multi-sensory materials will help our struggling readers by giving them experiences that will appeal to a variety of learning styles. This will help them tap into their own strengths as they work to build their skills.
Half of students from low‑income households
