Multilingual Learners Need PPE and Translation Tech

My Students

My school is located in a mixed socioeconomic area of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. My students come from diverse home environments--ranging from generational poverty to college graduates. Multi-generational Hawaiian, Filipino, and Caucasian families fill our classrooms as well as recent immigrants from China, Korea, South America, and Micronesia. Our school community embraces our diversity and provides a safe place where all learners strive for academic excellence and kindness towards others.

As we work towards safely reopening schools after a year of pandemic learning, I strive to help our multilingual learners access and understand critical information to keep our learning community safe.

One of my goals as a teacher is to empower my students with a voice in their community. I want to give purpose to their learning goals that go beyond the four walls of our classroom. As the English Learner Coordinator and Teacher for over 180 amazing multilingual learners at my school, I am constantly seeking opportunities to close the achievement gap for this subgroup of scholars and provide necessary learning tools to increase student success!

My Project

When the COVID-19 global pandemic reached our remote island in Hawaii, multilingual learners were severely impacted by school closures and distance learning. Now it is time to attempt to re-open our schools for in-person learning and we need your help to provide PPE and education about the prevention of germ transmission so all Hawaii students can return to learning in school.

Help me bring English Learner students back to campus safely by providing adequate PPE in the form of children's size face masks and hand wipes in addition to translation technology essential to help all staff and students communicate effectively, regardless of English communication levels.

Many of our students do not speak English fluently enough to communicate without assistive translation technology. These portable translation devices will help staff, parents, and students quickly convey essential information in the students' home language to support our new safety protocols to help my students successfully return to the classroom after a year of pandemic learning.
