Multicultural Books

Help me give my students multicultural books to enhance their learning from different world cultures, as well as our own Native American Cultures right here in Maine.

My Students

I am blessed to work in a pre-k through eighth grade rural school with just over three hundred and twenty students that values not only reading, writing and arithmetic, but also the arts and consumer sciences. So many schools lack funding for these 'extra' books and activities due to budgets that get stretched too thin to meet the general needs of academics. Over fifty percent of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Our Middle School students have several outside learning interests that they ask to learn about and staff tries to meet some of those outside interests as best we can. Much of this is done through reading novels that take us all over the world.

As a rural Maine community, we try to encourage our students to learn about other cultures that aren't always covered in core classes.

We value the opportunity top expose our students to cultures, lands and experiences other than their own. These books will not only enhance my social studies curriculum and help us meet our learning targets, but will support student engagement in learning about people and places outside of their own 'worlds'.

My Project

Students are always asking questions about cultures other than their own. Books are a wonderful way to introduce students to other cultures and answer many of their questions. The books I am requesting are written on multiple levels from novels to picture books, so that every student can access the information.

Students are able to read about and learn from other cultures without leaving Windsor, Maine.

Through books, students can see and learn about food, clothing, holidays, celebrations, as well as homelife, jobs, land areas from all over the world! I am always looking for materials that will assist students in their learning of other cultures and this project will help get some much needed resources in my classroom that students can access daily.
