Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Latinx illustrator, Joe Cepeda wrote, “When a young person sees a world in a book that appears familiar, it helps them navigate their own. A Latino child offered the opportunity to readily see self in a book is validated that their journey through life can also be navigated. By default, without examples that a young Latino reader can relate to, her participation in society at large seems less valid… Authenticity, in craft, in content.”

My students possess special superpowers, they are bilingual and bicultural!

They come from diverse backgrounds and are diverse learners and although they are bilingual they need help in recognizing that their linguistic abilities are significant.

I am teaching literacy to heritage Spanish students and I want to create an atmosphere where my students are reading for pleasure in Spanish. By donating these books, you are helping my students see themselves reflected in their literature. This will make for a positive learning environment inside and outside the classroom and it will support the development of personal worth within the larger context of society.

Help my students see that they are reflected in the very books that they read. These talented bilinguals come from diverse backgrounds and are diverse learners and they need help in recognizing that their culture is valued in our society and that bilingualism is an asset. Sandra Cisneros wrote, "It's important for all children to see themselves mirrored in books to confirm that their lives matters that their stories matter." With your help, our classroom library will grow and these texts will serve as a positive mechanism for ethnic dignity and strong sense of identity within a bicultural and multicultural society.
