We use picture cards daily to build vocabulary, practice sentence frames, and support comprehension for students at different language levels. Highlighters, glue, scissors, chart paper, and paper are used during interactive reading and writing activities, where students cut, sort, label, and create visual organizers to show their understanding. Snacks have also played an important role, helping students stay focused and feel cared for during longer lessons, especially for those who may not always have access to food during the school day.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and curious. Several students asked if the supplies were really for them, and their smiles said everything. One moment that stood out was during a vocabulary project where students used picture cards, highlighters, and folders to create personal word books. Students carefully glued images, highlighted key words, and proudly shared their pages with classmates. Even students who are usually quiet were eager to participate, using the visuals to support their speaking and build confidence.\r\n\r\nBecause of these resources, our next steps include expanding interactive lessons that combine reading, writing, and speaking. Students are currently using binders and folders to organize their work as they build thematic vocabulary and practice writing complete sentences. Chart paper is helping us co-create anchor charts that students can reference daily, and staplers are used to turn student work into small books they can reread. Thanks to your generosity, my students feel supported and motivated, and they are developing the language skills they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1767249968104,"projectUrl":"project/supplies-for-students/9928006/","projectTitle":"Supplies for Students!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gilliland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1863065_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1518881940183","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1863065"},{"teacherId":1863065,"projectId":9912695,"letterContent":"The new supplies have made a meaningful difference in my ELL reading class by allowing students to engage with print in more hands-on and confidence-building ways. Many of my students are developing early literacy skills in a new language, and having access to high-quality reading materials, visuals, and practice tools has helped them connect sounds, words, and meaning more effectively. We are using the resources daily during small-group reading, phonics practice, and independent work time, which has led to greater participation and improved reading stamina.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their reactions were immediate and joyful. Several students said, \"This is for us?\" and were eager to explore the books and tools. For many of them, it was the first time they had classroom materials that felt both accessible and designed specifically for their learning needs. One moment that stood out was during a partner reading activity—students who are usually hesitant volunteered to read aloud, using the new resources to support each other and celebrate success together.\r\n\r\nThanks to these supplies, our next steps include expanding guided reading lessons and building stronger decoding and comprehension skills through structured literacy activities. Students are currently working on reading short passages, discussing stories with partners, and applying new vocabulary in speaking and writing. Because of your support, my students feel seen, supported, and excited about learning, and they are building the confidence they need to continue growing as readers.","fullyFundedDate":1764180774153,"projectUrl":"project/supplies-for-super-readers/9912695/","projectTitle":"Supplies for Super Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gilliland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1863065_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1518881940183","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1863065"},{"teacherId":5776850,"projectId":8888475,"letterContent":"The new texts in our Spanish Language Arts (SLA) program for Heritage Speakers—like Solito by Javier Zamora—introduce key skills such as literary analysis, personal narrative writing, critical thinking, and media literacy. Students examine author's craft, narrative voice, and themes of migration, identity, and resilience. These texts also provide rich opportunities to practice translanguaging—shifting between Spanish, English, and Spanglish for deeper understanding and personal connection. Beyond traditional language arts skills, these books help students reflect on their own experiences and those of their communities, fostering empathy and civic awareness.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is dynamic, collaborative, and student-centered. Students annotate texts in both English and Spanish, engage in Socratic seminars, write reflective and analytical responses, and create zines, podcasts, and visual art projects based on their reading. We build in time for independent reading, group discussion, and vocabulary study that builds academic and cultural knowledge. Our classroom environment affirms students' linguistic backgrounds and invites them to bring their full selves to their literacy development.\r\n\r\nMany of our students see themselves reflected in these stories for the first time. One student shared that Solito made them feel \"seen and heard\" as a child of immigrants. Several students who usually stay quiet during class lit up with questions during our trip to see Javier Zamora speak, and many excitedly lined up to get their books signed. The fact that they could meet the author and ask him questions in Spanish was incredibly affirming. These texts are not just books—they are mirrors, windows, and bridges for our students.\r\n\r\nI'm excited to share how this work came to life recently: On March 11th, our 11th–12th grade SLA class and our SUN SLA class attended a live recording of OPB's Think Out Loud featuring Solito author Javier Zamora at McDaniel High School. Students listened to his interview, asked questions, and got their books signed. It was a powerful moment that connected classroom learning to real-world experiences and demonstrated the value of culturally responsive, rigorous instruction for multilingual learners.","fullyFundedDate":1739375887608,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-the-histories-of-el-salvador-a/8888475/","projectTitle":"Exploring the Histories of El Salvador and Guatemala with Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Orellana Lima","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5776850_orig.jpg?crop=3120,3120,x0,y374&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1632929995060","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-orellana"},{"teacherId":9521618,"projectId":9036552,"letterContent":"A huge 'thank you' for supporting our 11th grade students in studying Shakespeare's \"Othello.\" As a highly diverse, urban high school with large percentages of immigrant, multilingual, and underserved students, many of our learners struggle to access grade-level literary content.
