Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach general education students as well as special needs students. My school is in a very urban location. We are located in Paterson, New Jersey. Most students are not dominant in the English language. Our school has breakfast in the classroom program and lunch in the cafeteria because much of our population struggles with having basic needs met.

My students love to come into the art class even over Google Meets because they have a chance to become critical thinkers and independently create original artwork that relates to them on a personal level.

They are able to explore their emotions and release their frustrations by tapping into their inner thoughts and creating artwork that inspires me and others to keep creating and evolving artistically. I am inspired by my students daily.

Art therapy is a creative method of expression used as a therapeutic technique. Students will be able to create art that will help them understand their emotions, relieve stress, and create positive and uplifting artistic pieces. Students will learn how to become more intuitive and self-aware.

My Project

I think mini canvases can be easily distributed to my students to be able to paint from home. I think wooden ornaments, bookmarks, and peg dolls would be great for my students to be able to paint with their families. I think these would be cute momentos that will bring my students and families joy in a year that has been so difficult.

It would be great to have face, hands, and people cut-outs in different skin tones that really capture the diversity in our school and community.

I need my students to really understand that a community comprised of different people helps that community have a variety of ideas, thoughts, and solutions. Its a beautiful blend of cultures and traditions. What an important message,

I would love a Ukulele to be able to play and prompt kids through song. I find myself singing directions like it's time to go, go, go...so click the red telephone, phone, phone. My students really respond to the songs and repetition.
