My Students

LS kindergarteners and first grade students are poised at the beginning of their journey—to learn about themselves and classmates as students.

We are a small school serving a diverse population from all over Seattle (and beyond).

Donations help us get primary-specific materials beyond the basics—those more expensive items that enable us to connect deeper with learning or extend projects to tie a thread through multiple subjects.

Thank you for helping students in their formative years; the donations made to our primary school classroom ensure that young learners cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun and immersive environment. And the value of these experiences is far reaching; Such well-prepared students continually use these skills until they end their journeys as scholars and young adults.

My Project

The first day of each month, my students create a self-portrait. I challenge them to try a new style with each version. They have humor, notes on achievements, and have a space to reflect on the past month or so.

A quarter of a year into first-grade, they are noticing that the common packs of crayons and markers do not contain the skin shades to celebrate themselves and their classmates.

We ask you to help us by a yearsworth supply of materials for fully representing ourselves on paper. Having the proper materials informs children’s sense of belonging and their curiosity about diversity they see in others.

Seeing their efforts will be much easier when they have these true skin tone materials—they will have windows and mirrors in which to see themselves and others.
