My Students

Math is so much more accessible when students can use manipulatives to learn.

My students are full of life during lunch and in the hallways.

I want them to be full of life and excitement in my math classroom too! Our school consists of many 1st generation, low income families. They want to learn, but as most students their age, they are easily distracted, which is one reason I try to make math seem fun.

My Project

We will use the multi-link cubes to explore and develop understanding of a variety of math topics. The obvious use is for geometry topics such as area, perimeter and volume. The cubes can also be used to teach and learn about ratios, measures of central tendency, fractions, and more. We will often be using them while working in small groups, which helps students to develop their social skills as well as math skills. Furthermore, we have a procedure using the cubes and taking turns to talk about a math problem. Each student gets a certain cube color and puts a cube in the middle when they contribute to the conversation. Its a great way for students (and the teacher) to see who is actually participating and how much.

We currently have a very small number of these cubes already and whenever I get them out, students are automatically more interested in whatever it is we are going to learn.

Having enough of these cubes for everyone to use will make a huge difference in motivation and participation.
