My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. My aides and I serve 60 students each day in our reading intervention program. Most of our students are young readers who learn best with a hands-on approach.
Our struggling readers need more opportunities for multi-sensory learning.
They need manipulative materials to supplement our reading lessons with the hands-on practice that will solidify the concepts we are teaching.
My Project
My students need word blocks, sandpaper letters, wikki stix, bingo magnetic Wand and other hands-on materials for multi-sensory reading lessons. Multi-sensory materials can be especially helpful for students who struggle with reading. When students learn something using more than one of their senses, that learning is more likely to stay with them. In our reading intervention groups, we would like to include activities with more manipulatives. That way, the children will be able to use tiles, blocks, erasable markers, and wikki stix to build and write words while they read them. Besides talking about the sounds in words, the students will be able to physically count and represent the sounds with magnets. They will be able to feel the letters they are learning about as they say the sounds.
Multi-sensory materials will help our struggling readers by giving them experiences that will appeal to a variety of learning styles.
This will help them tap into their own strengths as they work to build their skills.
