Rocky Mount, NC Grades 9-12

We're a small city high school in rural NC, grades 9-12 in an old building next to the railroad tracks. I teach Art and Photography as my teaching assignment, but I also teach basic English, Math, Science, History, Civics and current events. You can't leave out any of the above if you teach students about Art. They're all included in what makes the power of the visual arts have lasting value and current relevance.

The geographic nature of our school district has made our school very multi-cultural, multi-racial,and economically diverse. In my current classes I have students from five countries. I have students who can read English, but can not speak it. I also have exceptional students who do not read well in their own language and need visual instruction and demonstration to learn in the same classes. I need to provide information verbally and visually in an wide variety of formats to engage all my students.

My art room is in a separate building from the library. The access to computer labs for visual media is very limited, but I can stream video to my art room TV monitor from the library. I can use these videos when I can not sign up for a computer lab.

I was inspired to build on my cross cultural art lesson plans by a new student from Saudi Arabia who was added to my class at mid semester. We had just started a project on creating painted mandalas based on Tibeten/spiritual mandalas. She used Arabic words in her design. The student next to her asked what it meant. It was her name. She wrote out his name in Arabic and the next thing I knew all the kids at the table wanted to see their name too. She carefully wrote each name below the English spelling for the four students at the table. It let her learn the names of the students near her in the class and made her feel like she belonged. The other kids were excited to learn something new. These materials will help me build on that success story. I want to find more similar projects. I would like to create African masks with my class. We did American folk art projects based on dolls, animals and birds.
