This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning a foreign language can be so much fun in a multi-media classroom! My classroom rewards risk-taking students who perform for their peers, applaud each other's efforts, and sing along to songs we study! We act, we laugh, we collaborate, and we use lots of Spanish every day.
My students are a diverse bunch of high school students.
Most of them are interested in careers in the medical/health fields, so being able to speak Spanish is extremely important to them. Our school has a strong foreign language program, and many students continue beyond the one mandatory year of language to take the optional state exam in Spanish and AP-level classes. My 2nd and 3rd year classes are essential to this flow.
Our school is large, but retains a small school feel. Students are well-known by their teachers, and receive extensive academic and emotional support so they can graduate college and career ready.
Seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and approximately thirteen percent receive special education services. Our 4-year graduation rate exceeds the citywide average (the 2014 graduation rate was almost 30 percentage points over the citywide average!) and we have a terrific 4-year college acceptance rate.
My Project
Traditional foreign language teaching methods do not work! Students need to experience language so they can almost subconsciously acquire it. To help my students experience Spanish, I use an extensive collection of electronic files, including presentations, music, comics, and videos, but unfortunately, this year, I can't use any of these things. I'm at a new school, where the technology isn't available. My students need an iPad and a protective cover.
With an iPad (& cover to protect it every night), I can provide my students with color-coded and color-differentiated chunks of language, practice reading authentic resources in Spanish, watch & narrate video segments, listen to music clips, and see many visual aids to help them understand the Spanish they are hearing. I will also be able to begin class the minute students walk in the door by projecting the daily agenda and beginning activity. Less time spent writing on the board = more time to practice Spanish.
I found a working projector, so now I need a device to connect to it!
I have worked in both technology-rich and technology-deficient classrooms and have experienced the huge impact that multi-media activities have on the success of my students.
When I can use a projector and iPad to share visual and auditory information, students are engaged, enthusiastic, and actually learn Spanish. In a school with endless technology, but only me as a Spanish teacher, my students achieved a 100% pass rate on the state exam. Help me bring this type of success to my new students!
