My Students

I am a Language Arts teacher at a middle school in New York City. The population of my school and class is very diverse. Over 95% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households. This, however, doesn't slow us down. Not one bit.

I have an incredible group of resilient incoming students who have reached out to me about the books they'd like to see in their classroom library.

Having the "right books" to read is not usually an obstacle in my classroom, but in the times we are currently living in - with funding totally eliminated from public schools and many social issues coming to the forefront of our country - when it comes to books, I'm going to need some help stocking my library with some necessary items.

My Project

My classes are amazingly diverse, however, my classroom library is not. With everything going on around us today, my classroom is looking like it will be coming up short in terms of providing my classes with a complete collection of books by the authors they love and need. My classroom is in a dire need of an influx of new books - books by authors that my students already love - that they want to read right now, in addition to books about social issues that are needed now more than ever.

The books in this proposal include numerous authors that students continuously ask for - plus new titles to help educate and teach them about social injustices.

I'm thrilled at the opportunity to bring books by authors my kids already love into their classroom library when they return for this very challenging school year, in addition to books addressing multiple trending social topics. The foundation is already there. My students already have read a novel or maybe two by the authors included in this proposal. Now it's time to bring the rest in!
