Much Ado About Having No Fear Shakespeare!

Help me give my students equitable access to classic English literature that they will feel more confident in reading.

My Project

When I was in 7th grade, I remember reading Romeo and Juliet during my English class's obligatory Shakespeare unit, and hating it because it was "boring" and "everyone talked in circles". However, when I was in 10th grade reading Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing I enjoyed it, because I had a teacher who used No Fear Shakespeare to break down the dense prose. I started catching all the dramatic irony and humor I had been missing. So now that I am a teacher myself, I want to get my students started off on a better foot than I had at their age. Literature should be enjoyed by everyone and accessible to everyone, no matter their reading skills or experience.

The No Fear Shakespeare publications provides both the original plays side-by-side with plain English translations that my special education students will have a much easier time understanding.

Students who want a challenge can see how the translations work as they read the original versions alongside the plain language. And it will be much easier for me to provide extra literacy support and scaffolding for students that need it when I have a professionally translated version of the play to work off of instead of attempting to create my own. Ten shared student books of three different plays will provide enough classroom materials for multiple units on irony, drama, characterization, etc.

Most of all, my students will get that obligatory middle school English class Shakespeare unit just like I did. I fear that due to limitations from COVID and other factors, my students might not be getting what they wanted from their school experience. So I'm hoping that with No Fear Shakespeare, my fears about this tiny part of that experience will be much ado about nothing.
