Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom goal is that every single person in the room is always safe, happy, and learning. My class and I work hard every day to make sure we are reaching this goal by being helpful, caring, and focusing on our learning goals.
My students are enthusiastic, eager, and adventurous learners.
They are beginning to take risks and are accountable for their own learning to be successful and make positive differences to the world they are living in. Many of my students' families have traveled in search of a better education for their children. Despite the challenges they face on a daily basis, my students show up to school with smiles on their faces, ready to learn.
My Project
Our classroom is a community in which all students are encouraged to be proud of who they are, and to challenge themselves to grow and learn from each other every day. This year we will be participating in the classroom book a day challenge where as a class, we will read a picture book a day and engage in book talks and discussions that explore the cultural diversity within our community.
My students need engaging books that will act as mirrors, windows, and sliding doors by allowing them to see reflections of themselves in literature, learn about different cultures and communities through literature and to engage in these new and diverse worlds through literature.
In order to truly learn from and relate to literature, my students need books that are engaging and vibrant but also meaningful to them. They deserve to not only learn through books about other communities and cultures but to have their own communities and cultures reflected in the literature that they are exposed to. Our community and school is a diverse place in which families come from many different places and speak many different languages. Our classroom libraries should reflect this rich diversity by providing books that reflect our community.
