This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who serves low-income students in my area. I work at an early intervention preschool. My students have speech and language delays and disabilities that impact their ability to communicate with their peers and adults in their community and school. Therapy occurs primarily through play based themes in small groups. My students love to engage in read aloud stories, play with age appropriate toys and games, and do hands-on craft activities.

My Project

I serve a preschool population of largely underserved children in a large public school district. Many of these children do not have access to at home libraries or a variety of developmental toys. I serve them as a speech-language pathologist and focus on providing speech and language therapy to expand and grow their language. Therapy includes teaching new vocabulary and language structure through predictable stories.

The book set on my wish list contains predictable text that facilitates language learning and growth.

Language is also about making associations and categorizing. These skills help organize language for use. The sorting and categorization set on my wish list also has manipulatives that bring language to life for young preschoolers.

The preschool developmental years are full of sensory awareness. The magic box will be a fun activity where children will use their sense of touch to identify common objects and create a stronger link between sensory skills and expressive language.
