Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine trying to take notes in math class without having a pencil? My students come to class ready to learn, but do not have pencils to take their notes. They understand the material in class, and then attempt to complete their homework without having notes from the day's lecture.
I teach 8th grade Pre-algebra and Algebra I at a high-poverty school in Louisiana, and my students are often unable to purchase basic school supplies like pencils and highlighters for use in my class.
They often are not taught how to take proper notes before attending my class, and much of my time is spent reinforcing good study habits and note-taking procedures. We often use interactive note-taking sheets and work regularly with graphs and graphic organizers, but the students are not able to complete them without having to repeatedly borrow school supplies from one another.
My Project
In my classroom, I'd like to put together a mini school supply kit to attach to every desk. The students waste precious time every day by borrowing materials from one another (or from me), and often these materials are not returned and go missing. By having a kit available at each desk, I hope to reinforce student accountability by having each student responsible for the items in their kit, and reduce wasted time in class on forgotten materials.
Each supply kit would include: a pencil, a hand-held pencil sharpener, a green pen, two different color highlighters, a sticky-note pad, a 6" ruler, and a dry-erase marker. We use the green pens for correcting work, the sticky-note pads to ask questions that we run out of time in class for and other various activities, the highlighters on notes and while graphing, and the dry erase markers on miniature dry erase boards.
I am a first year teacher trying to make math accessible to all of my students.
I hate when my students are dedicated and willing to learn, but without basic materials that hinder their success. By providing basic school supply kits in my classroom, my students will not fall behind because of monetary restrictions outside their control.
