I teach 8th grade Pre-algebra and Algebra I at a high-poverty school in Louisiana, and my students are often unable to purchase basic school supplies like pencils and highlighters for use in my class. They often are not taught how to take proper notes before attending my class, and much of my time is spent reinforcing good study habits and note-taking procedures. We often use interactive note-taking sheets and work regularly with graphs and graphic organizers, but the students are not able to complete them without having to repeatedly borrow school supplies from one another.
