Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The district is located in an urban environment in upstate NY. Despite its bucolic surroundings, our students come from a variety of different socioeconomic backgrounds with 100% of the children receiving free breakfast and lunch.
Our school is an ethnically diverse environment, with students speaking a multitude of languages and representing a variety of cultures.
Because of certain economic and social challenges, students sometimes find it difficult to stay positive and to learn. It is no wonder that an interest in reading is not a priority for a lot of these students.
After reviewing data of our fifth graders and providing surveys, it was discovered that our fifth-grade students, especially males, not only dislike reading but seem to have an aversion to it. I have found a foot in! They love mysteries! If this project is funded, it will be the foundation of a month-long mystery unit where the kids will not only read and learn about the characteristics of the genre but will participate in a grade mystery challenge!
My Project
These high-interest, lower-level books are guaranteed to interest my reluctant fifth-grade readers. It has been so difficult to get kids interested in books again coming out of almost two full years of remote learning and computer overload.
We will be embarking on a major mystery/horror unit next month and this collection of short stories is perfect for students to practice their inference and deduction skills!
This will be a part of a bigger, grade-wide interactive mystery activity we have planned for the spring. It is through this interaction that I hope to build a love of reading again.
