Help me give my students We are ALWAYS short on wiggle seats (ADHD kiddos). The stools are for a coworkers 1st/2nd grade groups, the stands for my 5th graders yoga ball seats; keep them still!
Each project that I am registering tonight is designed to benefit all of our special education kiddos. Chances are, general education students will benefit as well - and that is icing on the cake.
At our school, we estimate a little less than one-third of our student population falling into the special education category, whether be it a medical 504 or an IEP for Intellectual Disability.
Additionally, our kiddos generally, and often, face some pretty tough circumstances, and yet they continue to be a source of inspiration to our staff.
We've found, across America, that in our third year of teaching during a global pandemic, the admirable resiliency of our youth is being tested to an extreme. For this, and for a million other reasons, I want to give our kiddos everything in my power to make their school year, lives, and experiences as glorious, easy and memorable as can be.
My Project
No matter how many wiggle cushions we order per year, we never have enough. Since the behaviors are bigger and more pronounced this year than over previous years, we are trying to pull out all the tricks. My team and I agree that wiggle cushions make a HUGE difference for our kiddos that struggle the most to persevere, stay on task, and channel their energy throughout the day. These are mostly for kiddos on my coworkers caseloads, as I found a way to have a bunch donated for my 5th graders earlier this year.
One of my co-workers, who is in her first year teaching and is our special education teacher for 1st and 2nd grades, has been trying endlessly to find wobble stools for her very animated students to use during pull-out instruction groups.
The wobble stools are for her and her kiddos (and whoever else might use them).
The yoga ball bases are for some of my 5th graders. I used my budget money to order big yoga balls to be used in place of standard seating. My students are benefiting greatly but often struggle to stay balanced throughout instruction. The bases are to help them focus while simultaneously having their sensory and energy needs met!
As I said earlier, we are pulling out all the tricks this year to help our students have a successful year. Attending elementary school during the third year of a global pandemic is beyond challenging, and we have pushed our youth to the ceiling of their resiliency already. My goal is to do whatever is in my power to make this year easier and more accessible for our amazing students.
