This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I notice that my students engage well with longer projects. I have quite a few art students who love to draw in the margins of their notes and tests and proudly show off their work to me during lunch. This inspired me to look into a math-based project that would help them with real world skills and hopefully incorporate some creativity and art. I remembered a project that I did in middle school where students were grouped into an engineering firm where our job was to build and design a bridge to hold the most amount of money. We also learned how to write checks and manage a budget.

I want to implement this bridge building project in my classroom during standardized test season to give them a mental break and hopefully let them have more social class time since so much of their days will be filled with silent test-taking environments.

I think my kids have worked really hard this year and deserve something fun to wrap up and summarize their progress this year.
