Ms.! I Read for 3 Hours Last Night!--We Need More Books!
My students need a variety of high-interest, low-level books. They are all recent immigrants and are still very much in the process of learning English.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I believe in the power of reading and story telling. In my classroom, we learn through stories. We learn about others, we learn about ourselves, and we learn about our world. We form questions together and then we use stories to help us answer our questions.
I teach in an urban public high school in Dorchester, MA.
My students are all recent immigrants to the U.S., coming from the D.R., Cape Verde, Guatemala, Haiti, El Salvador, Vietnam, and more. They range in age from 15 to 21. Nearly all students qualify for free or reduced lunch, most students will be the first in their family to graduate from college, and many will be the first in their family to graduate from high school. They are all driven to not only learn English, but to really succeed in the United States.
My Project
Each day in my class, we will do "independent reading." This is a sacred time where we can dive into our books and immerse ourselves fully in the power of story telling. Students will use my library and our public library to choose books that they want to read in this time.
In order for this to be successful, students need books that interest them and that they can read on their own. Because my students are older than your typical 9th grader, finding books that meets this criteria is difficult. With the help of my colleagues, I have selected high interest books (ranging from baseball to Justin Beiber to MLK Jr. to other immigrant stories) that also meet their reading level. Reading every day will build students' literacy, fluency, and hopefully their love for stories.
Consistent research has demonstrated that the more students read as they are acquiring a new language, the faster their literacy and fluency develops.
Donations to my classroom library will fuel this growth. My goal is that students will not only jump in reading level and grade level, but that they will also develop a love for reading
