Ms. H's Cozy Corner

My students need bean bags, comfortable chairs, rugs, and pillows for flexibility and movement in the classroom. Classes are overcrowded with large, immobile desks, and having flexible seating would allow for a better learning environment, with more hands-on, kinesthetic activities.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a lively, intelligent, and diverse group of kids. I teach all races and ethnicities, students from both single parent and 2-parent homes, various religions, students who are on-level, and students who are SpEd and/or ELLs. It's a very diverse group of learners, but that's what makes our classroom great.

We have developed a classroom of mutual respect, where each day we focus on becoming better people (me included).

Our school is Title 1, where more than 90 percent of our population is on free or reduced lunch, so many of my students don't have an abundance of resources or opportunities. However, my students have goals, aspirations, and dreams that they work towards achieving each day. Some days are better than others, but in the end, I truly believe that each of my students is capable of success, and day after day they prove me right.

My Project

Flexible seating is designing classroom seating in a new and innovative way in order to improve student motivation, increase engagement, and create safe and comfortable learning environments. My classroom utilizes 32 desks with the chair attached. Not only are these desks large and space-consuming, but they also inhibit flexibility and different seating arrangements. Due to the number of students and the small size of my room, students are limited in space, and some students are even seated with their back facing the board.

My aim in offering these flexible seating options is to allow students the space necessary for creativity, collaboration, and communication.

This would provide students with comfortable places to enjoy reading, small areas for collaboration, and would increase motivation because people prefer to learn when they are in a comfortable environment. Bean bags, comfortable chairs, rugs, and pillows will be used in lieu of transitional desks, which will allow students to work in small collaborative groups, will allow more room in the classroom for movement during lessons, and will create a welcoming environment, which is more like a comfortable home, than a rigid classroom.
