I teach in a high school where many of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Several receive special education services, and many are emergent bilinguals working hard to master English while navigating high school academics. Despite the obstacles they face, they show up ready to learn, eager to participate, and full of voices that deserve to be heard. Our classroom is focused on helping students build confidence and skill in communication—through writing, speaking, and meaningful collaboration. Every day, we work to create a safe, supportive environment where students feel empowered to share their ideas, take academic risks, and grow as thinkers. In this classroom, we don’t just focus on grades—we focus on growth, belonging, and giving students the skills they need to thrive beyond the classroom.
