Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is my second year of teaching and I need some supplies. I am teaching 1st grade at a Title I school in Las Vegas. These students will benefit from any help we can get. This is a low-income and very transient area, so students may not have the opportunity to utilize literacy resources at home, so I want to ensure they have those resources readily available at school. When those resources are available, success is sure to happen.
My Project
My first graders love the opportunity to use technology in the classroom. We use our computers to read eBooks, build literacy skills, and research. Unfortunately, they have struggled with computers shutting down, sound cutting in and out, not connecting to the internet, and so on. Despite our technology struggles, they persevere. By donating to our project you will be investing in their future and success in multiple areas. This class has a love of learning and desire to meet their goals across subjects. Having Chromebooks that are in good working condition allows them the opportunity to read thousands of eBooks as well as enables them with to improve vocabulary, comprehension, and for some, the English language. We use a program called Lexia that has students practice and master various reading skills that we may not be able to focus on in class. For example, if a student is struggling with vowels or blending sounds, Lexia has them practice those skills until they have it mastered. Once students have mastered a level they receive a certificate. Once they receive that certificate, their name is announced over the loudspeaker for the whole school to celebrate. They truly love to succeed on these levels and the excitement is something that makes each day worth it. They challenge themselves daily, in every aspect of the school day. They are eager to learn and aspire to end the school year reading at a second-grade level.
